Ambika is a hybrid from India named after a goddess in Jainism. It is a cross between 'Amrapali' and 'Janardan Passand'.
We planted ours in 2017 and it began fruiting in 2020 .The fruit are oval shaped, medium-sized, and very beautiful with a stunning, eye-catching red color. The flesh is yellow, quite firm but fiberless, and has a very good classic mango flavor with notes of stone fruit. It has a large monoembryonic seed.
It has been a late season mango for us in south Florida, ripening from late July into early September. It has a low-medium vigor growth habit with spreading, dense canopy. The fruit and flowers both have displayed good disease tolerance thus far. Ambika may be a mango to consider for those who enjoy classically flavored fruits and want a good late season option superior to some of the older varieties.
