Blackie is from Jamaica, where it is sometimes known as ‘Black’ or ‘Green Gage’ depending on the locale.
It is a small fruit that remains green at maturity, with an orange colored flesh that contains some fiber and a polyembryonic seed.
We planted our Blackie tree in 2017 to serve Jamaican customers who request this variety. Unfortunately, the tree appears ro be an imposter of some sort, the fruit not resembling the true Blackie in shape. For now we have taken to calling it 'Blackie seedling' (though the tree we purchased is grafted). It is small, oval/ooid in shape and has a somewhat fibrous texture, orange flesh and a sweet flavor in the classic group with notes of roasted corn.
