Taylor is a Guatemalan type avocado that originated in Miami, FL as a seed of Royal avocado planted in 1908. Propagation began in 1914 and it was named after William A Taylor, who was the USDA's chief of the Bureau of Plant Industry. Taylor received some attention during the development of avocado growing in Florida owing to its production and cold tolerance.
The fruit is small and pyriform-shaped, with somewhat rough green skin. The flesh is pale colored and has medium oil content with a somewhat mild flavor. The seed is medium-sized.
The tree is a vigorous grower, and highly productive. It also has good cold hardiness with mature trees being able to tolerate temperatures into the mid-20s Fahrenheit.
Taylor is a late-season cultivar here, normally ripening between December and January. It produces A-type flowers.
