Tonnage is a pure Guatemalan-type, grown from a ‘Taylor’ seed planted on the property of Dan M. Roberts in Homestead, Florida in 1916 and selected in 1921. It has very good flavor and the trees are heavy producers, hence the name.
The fruit is pyriform shaped, medium-to-large in size, and has a green, pebbly skin.
The flesh is pale colored with a rich flavor.
Tonnage received some commercial plantings but quickly fell out of favor due to having a relatively short harvesting season for an avocado (about a month).
The fruit matures in August and September, and the tree produces B-type flowers.
