Ameeri is from India, an old variety introduced to Florida at the beginning of the 20th century. Not commonly found anymore, it has sometimes gone under the name 'Amini Long' (not to be confused with 'Amini', a different cultivar). It performed acceptably in the early mango growing days in south Florida but fell out of recognition after a few decades for unclear reasons and was not propagated in the Florida nursery trade thereafter. Examples of Ameeri are now relagated to the germplasm collections of Miami-Dade county.
The enlongated oval-shaped fruit develop a red blush, are large in size and have a firm yellow fiberless flesh. The lovely flavor is of the Indian/West Indian sort with notes of resin, spice, and classic stone fruit flavors. It is somewhat comparable to Step mango. It has a long monoembryonic seed.
We planted Ameeri in 2017, and it fruited for the first time in 2022. The growth habit is spreading, moderately vigorous with a dense canopy and long internodes. It appears to be a later mid-season mango here and production has been very light through 2024.
