Cepeda Especial
This mamey was introduced to the United States from Mexico, where it was grown in the collection of Eduardo Marin of Oxkutscab. It was among a number of Marin's selections brought to Florida by the Zill nursery of Boynton Beach.
The fruit are medium-to-large in size, oblong in shape an have a very dark red colored flesh that is silky smooth and not too dense. The flavor is superb, so much so that we regard Cepeda Especial as one of the best mamey varieties in existence. It is typically single-seeded.
The tree has been a vigorous grower for us with an open, spreading canopy. It is a later-summer fruiting mamey, generally in season here between July and September, and its production has been quite good thus far.
