A Pre-Order Grafting Request is an order for us to produce the specific tree that we don't currently have available in stock. We must graft the tree and then it must go through a multi-month process to heal and grow. Only Once the small tree has completed two flushes of growth since it was grafted do we consider it ready to leave our nursery.

Fuerte was selected in Mexico and was introduced to the US via California in 1911 by a man named Carl Schmidt. It's thought to have been a hybrid of Mexican and Guatemalan types. It was very successful in California and became the most widely planted variety commercially in that state until the advent of the Hass cultivar, which superceded it. It has also been grown commercially in south America and Australia.

In Florida, Fuerte has not been recommended due to fungal issues and poor production. Our own Fuerte tree took a long time to begin fruiting but has produced consistent crops in recent years, though light in number. The fruit is medium-sized, pyriform-shaped and dark green at maturity. The quality is quite good although the seed is rather large. The flesh is cream colored, very nicely flavored and fairly high in oil, suitable eough that it can be used to make guacamole. It does have a somewhat large seed.

We've found the fruit to be somewhat prone to splits and anthracnose tat can at times spoil it; prompt harvesting seems to alleviate this issue to some extent. The tree is a vigorous grower for us with dense canopy. It is a mid-season variety here in south Florida, usually ripening between September and October. Fuerte produces B-type flowers.
