IMPORTANT READ BEFORE Make your Grafting Request Order

Late Summer & Fall Grafted Trees should be ready the following Spring. Deadline is October 01

A Pre-Order Grafting Request is an order for us to produce the specific tree that we don't currently have available in stock. We must graft the tree and then it must go through a multi-month process to heal and grow. Only Once the small tree has completed two flushes of growth since it was grafted do we consider it ready to leave our nursery.

Gouveia was from the property of Ruth Gouveia of Palolo Valley, Oahu, Hawaii and said to be a seedling of Pirie (see 'Bombay'), though Pirie at times is a name used interchangeably with 'White Piri' in Hawaii, thus Gouveia's precise parentage is uncertain. It began to receive some attention from horticulturalists in Hawaii in the 1950s and was named in 1964. Over a number of years, it was evaluated by the University of Hawaii and recommended for home planting in dry areas. The original tree still stands today.

The Gouveia fruit are described as ovoid-ovate in shape, medium sized and are known to develop attractive red blush color on the skin.

We grafted Gouveia in 2019 with budwood obtained from TREC on the strength of the written reports of its eating quality, as well as having observed some promising production on Gouveia trees growing in Homestead, and the fact that it is a Piri descendent, as varieties from this line have demonstrated some resistance to mango bacterial black spot.

The tree fruited in 2021, and we found the fruit to be of very high quality belonging to the classic flavor group. The fruit are high quality classically flavored, with yeelow flesh and a monoembryonic seed.

After several years of production, due to differences from reported flavor and possibly differences in fruit shape, we are now unsure whether this is the true Gouveia of Hawaii or not. Thus we have taken to calling it 'TREC Gouveia' for now until we are able to confirm whether it is the same.
