In India, "Alampur Baneshan" is a distinct variety and should not be confused with Baneshan (which is also known as Banganapalli or Banganapalli).but we have discovered over the years that what was introduced to Florida as Alampur Baneshan is in fact the same mango as Imam Passand.
It is a distinct variety, developing very little skin color (often remaining green even when ripe), and has a firm light colored, almost white flesh that is very sweet with strong resin and spice flavors, with a distinctive perfumey aroma. It is a medium-sized, oval-shaped fruit that turns a greenish-yellow at maturity. The seed is small and monoembryonic.
The flesh is medium firm, fiberless, and pale yellow in color, containing a monoembryonic seed.
The flavor is outstanding, with a strong and interesting aromatic quality to it, with plenty of sweetness and spice notes.
Production is good by the standards of Indian varieties introduced to south Florida. The fruit will often develop cracks in the skin as it approaches maturity, but is usually still fine to eat despite this.
This mango is somewhat common in southern India where it originated and is also known as Himayat, Himayudin and other similar names.
Imam Passand trees have a slow, spreading growth habit with open canopy and can easily be kept small. They flower very easily and regularly in south Florida's climate. It is an early-to-midseason fruit, ripening from June into July most years.
