Pillsbury was originally called “Pillsbury’s Improved Haden”, and was a Haden seedling selected by Asa Pillsbury of Palma Sola, Florida, a well-known member of the Bradenton area community in the early 20th century and a small-time mango grower at the time. ‘Pillsbury’ garnered some local attention and was produced in the nursery trade a minor amount, but never caught on across Florida. Today it is found in the germplasm collections in Miami-Dade County.
The fruit is round in shape, with a similar appearance and color toon to Haden itself, turning a bright Reed with yellow background color.
We acquired Pillsbury budwood in 2018, topworking it onto a mature tree. As this graft was not growing due to being outgrown by the rest of the canopy, we took budwood off it in 2022 and grafted several potted trees to preserve the variety within our collection. A Tree was planted in 2023.
