Pollock is a pure West Indian type that was a seedling planted by Mr. S.H. Pollock in Miami, Florida in 1896 or 1897, from a fruit of a tree that had been brought from Cuba.
It fruited in 1901 and was immediately recognized for its superior eating quality, receiving commercial propagation thereafter.
Though it became widely grown commercially in south Florida during the first half of the 20th century, it fell out of favor due to lackluster production.
Pollock fruit are dark green, pear/pyriform shaped, and quite large, usually at least several pounds in weight.
The flesh is yellow, very low in oil content but nonetheless quite nicely flavored, superior to varieties like Miguel and Russell.
Our tree has produced acceptably.
Pollock itself produces B-type flowers, and matures its fruit during the summer from July through August.
