This mango is originally thought to be from modern Chennai (formerly known as Madras), in the state of Tamil Nadu in India, and reportedly of excellent eating quality. It was introduced to the US from India in 1904 and planted at the USDA's Plant Introductory Garden in Miami.
We obtained a small tree in 2018 for evaluation. That tree died but a few years later we obtained budwood from the USDA which we topworked onto a stump. The tree produced its first fruit for us in 2023.
The fruit is oval-ovate shaped, medium size, and turns light yellow at maturity. The flesh is fiberless, yellow, and has a very rich classic-subacid type flavor. The seed is monoembryonic.
The tree has a vertical growth habit with dense canopy.
We look forward to evaluating Madras in future seasons.
Flavor: Classic sub-acid
Country: India
