- If we receive the order between after September 24th and before May 1st, The trees will be grafted in Spring & should be ready by the end of the year.
- For orders made after May 01st and before of September 24th will be grafted in late Summer and should be ready in the Spring following year, May most likely.
Only Once the small tree has completed two flushes of growth since it was grafted do we consider it ready to leave our nursery.
(Estimated time is 6 to 8 months. Some varieties take longer time to growth)
Carla was selected from Gary Zill's breeding program (planting # C-12) in Boynton Beach, FL and was released in 2016. It was a Zill-80 seedling with 'Gary' speculated as its pollinating parent.
The fruit tends to mature mid-to-later season, July through August. The flesh is yellow, fiberless and has a complex, very delicious classic-subacid flavor similar to its siblings 'Fruit Punch' and 36-8. The seed is large and monoembryonic. The fruit has a tendency to ripen unevenly if allowed to tree-ripen, and should instead be harvested mature green and ripened off the tree.
We planted several Carla trees in 2017 for evaluation purposes. It first fruited in 2019 and they've been consistent producers since. This mango has tremendous potential as a superior late-season alternative to Kent as it hasn't had the same disease problems and offers better flavor. The trees are vigorous growers with vertical, open canopy.
We have seen enough from Carla at this point to recommend it as a backyard tree to growers in Florida, and we feel it will probably perform well in southern California as well due to its vigor.
Flavor: Classic Sub-acid
